Development planning

Planning permission has been secured for a large artist’s studio with ancillary residential accommodation, sited in the spectacular Essex coastal landscape.

Working with Nicolas Tye Architects, our planning team successfully led artist Jo Madden through the planning process to achieve his dream of establishing a new studio space for collaborative working with other artists in residence.

The striking building approved is located adjacent to the River Blackwater and enjoys an open relationship with the wider sensitive landscape. A riverside public footpath ensures that passers-by will enjoy the building as part of a string of local landmarks in the immediate area which includes various listed buildings, structures, and a scheduled ancient monument.

AZ Urban Studio led the planning process through pre-application and application stages, including advising upon a legal agreement associated with the building uses.

The project is one of a number of collaborations between our practice and Nicolas Tye Architects.
