Development planning

AZ Urban Studio has secured planning permission for a major development in Welwyn Garden City, enabling large-scale regeneration in the coming years.

The development includes the substantial expansion of Campus West car park by introducing a new decked system increasing parking provision to 490 spaces.  In addition, the development will increase the variety of parking spaces with significantly increased disabled, electric and family parking spaces, improve cycle parking and include improvements to highways and landscape.

The expansion of the existing use is a crucial component in the council’s broader regeneration strategy, WGC 2120, for Welwyn Garden City, allowing consolidation of existing surface car parking and facilitating the future regeneration of Campus East, a key regeneration site for the town, which will deliver hundreds of new homes for Welwyn Garden City.

The intensification of use on this prominent site located in a sensitive conservation area engaged several critical planning issues, including heritage, design, transport, ecology and drainage. AZ Urban Studio led the preparation and submission of the planning application and acted as agent. We undertook negotiations with the Local Planning Authority, Historic England and the Highways Authority and led the public engagement process (as part of a broader engagement process run by the council).

This project builds on our earlier work with Bourne Parking and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council at Hatfield and our ongoing role advising the Council on the regeneration of Welwyn Garden City.
