Hide (291 Hackney Road)
Development planning
Working with Manalo & White architects, AZ Urban Studio has helped secure planning permission to build a mixed-use development on a semi-derelict carpark adjoining Haggerston Park.
As Hackney Road in east London continues to changes and develop opportunities have emerged to create innovative mixed-use developments that meet urgent housing need while improving the urban realm. This backland site incorporated multiple site constraints and complexities, including, a requirement to retain a substantial proportion of operational carpark, a close relationship to the setting of a listed church, and proximity to adjoining occupiers.
The development, designed by Manalo & White architects and Scenesmith, incorporates nine flats, across two separate buildings with a commercial ground floor facing on to the park. The development also includes an upgraded and improved parking and public realm for the existing church.
AZ Urban Studio advised the development design team before purchase and prepared a comprehensive planning statement, justifying critical planning issues including the principle of development, mix and tenure, parking, design and heritage. Planning permission was secured under delegated authority.
