9 Fitzjohn’s Avenue, NW
Development planning
Planning permission has been secured for the change of use and significant remodelling of a large former hostel building on Fitzjohn’s Avenue, one of the grandest streets in the NW3 area, located at the heart of the Fitzjohn’s and Netherall Conservation Area. Our clients purchased the building from the London Borough of Camden, with the aim of converting it back into a substantial family home.
Working with Finkernagel Ross architects, AZ Urban Studio advised upon the full range of planning matters engaged by the project and led negotiations with the local planning authority through to approval.
The approved scheme extends to some 1,200 sq metres and includes a full additional basement level, and a large double-height glass extension to the rear of the building. Having been heavily altered in the 1970s under the Council’s ownership, the design by Finkernagel Ross seeks to reinstate the original character of the building at the top floors, while providing a highly contemporary approach to an extension at the lower levels.
The project demonstrates the ability of our planning team to work closely with architects to formulate and justify high-quality contemporary design in historic environments. We are currently working with Finkernagel Ross architects on a number of other housing projects in historic environments in London.
